Artificial intelligence giant OpenAI announced GPT-4 on March 14, 2023, the next major update to the technology that powers ChatGPT and the search engine that uses it, Microsoft Bing. GPT-4 is said to be bigger, faster and more accurate than ChatGPT, so much so that it even passes many top-level exams, such as the Uniform Bar Exam, which is taken by those who want to become lawyers in the US.

On social media, the company touted the language model’s strengths, saying it is more creative and collaborative than ever before. While GPT-3.5-powered ChatGPT only accepts text input, GPT-4 can also use images to create captions and analytics. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. We’ll explain what the new language model is, what it isn’t and how it outperforms its predecessor.

What is GPT-4?

GPT stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer and is a type of language model that uses deep learning to generate human-like, speech-based text.

GPT-4, short for Generating Pre-trained Transformer 4, is the fourth iteration of the GPT family of large language models developed by OpenAI. Announced on March 14, 2023, GPT-4 is a large multimodal model. Multimodal models can encompass more than text; for example, GPT-4 also accepts images as input. GPT-3 and GPT-3.5 only worked in one modality, text, meaning users could only ask questions by typing.

In addition to the new image processing capability, OpenAI says GPT-4 “demonstrates human-level performance on a variety of professional and academic benchmarks.” Also the successor to the GPT-3 model that powers the viral AI chatbot ChatGPT, GPT-4, like previous versions, is designed to produce human-like text, complete tasks such as summarization and language translation, and even produce creative writing such as poetry, music lyrics and fiction. In addition, the language model can pass a simulated bar exam with a score in the top 10 percent of test takers and can solve difficult problems with greater accuracy thanks to its broader general knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

GPT-4 is also now capable of processing more than 25,000 words of text, opening up a wider range of use cases, including long-form content creation, document search and analysis, and extended conversations.

How to use GPT-4?

OpenAI has announced its latest, sleekest GPT-4 model with a subscription plan of $20 per month. While this is not good news for free ChatGPT users, there are plenty of features available to upgrade to the paid version.

So, how can you experience all these touted capabilities of GPT-4? To log in and access GPT-4, you will need ChatGPT+, the paid version of the site. Just follow these steps to purchase a subscription:

  • Open the OpenAI website.
  • If you don’t have a subscription, follow the steps to create one.
  • To get the premium version, you will need to upgrade by selecting “Upgrade to Plus” from the sidebar. (If you already have access to ChatGPT Plus, the site will take you directly to ChatGPT4.)
  • The upgrade option will show you a comparison between the free and premium versions.
  • After paying, you will get full access to the latest version of the chatbot.
  • When starting a new chat, a drop-down menu will give you the option to use one of the older models or GPT-4. Note that ChatGPT-4 is currently slower than the other models, OpenAI only calls it the most powerful version so far.

How is GPT-4 different from GPT-3 and GPT-3.5?

chat gpt 4 What is GPT-4

Although it has the same features as its predecessors, GPT-4, which was announced as the most powerful version, brought new features with it. So what are the differences between GPT-4, GPT-3 and GPT-3.5?

Here are some important differences:

GPT-4 can now process images.

The most noticeable change in GPT-4 is that it is multimodal, allowing it to understand multiple modalities of information. GPT-3 and ChatGPT’s GPT-3.5 were limited to textual input and output, meaning they could only read and write. But GPT-4 can be fed with images and asked to output information accordingly.

If this reminds you of Google Lens, that’s understandable. But Lens only looks for information about an image. GPT-4 is much more sophisticated in terms of understanding and analyzing an image.

GPT-4 is harder to fool.

One of the biggest drawbacks of models like ChatGPT and Bing is their tendency to go off the rails at times because they produce prompts that make people angry or, worse, downright scared. They can also confuse the facts and produce misinformation.

OpenAI says it trained GPT-4 for 6 months using lessons learned from ChatGPT as well as from a “competitor testing program”, resulting in the company’s “best-ever results in factuality, routability, and refusal to go out of bounds”.

GPT-4 can process much more information at a time.

Large Language Models (LLMs) can be trained on billions of parameters, which means countless amounts of data, but there are limits to how much information they can process in a conversation. ChatGPT’s GPT-3.5 could process 4,096 tokens, or about 8,000 words, but GPT-4 increases those numbers to 32,768 tokens, or about 64,000 words.

This increase means that ChatGPT can process 8,000 words at a time before it starts to lose track, while GPT-4 can maintain its integrity in much longer conversations. It can also process long documents and generate long-form content, which was much more limited in GPT-3.5.

GPT-4 has improved fidelity.

OpenAI acknowledges that GPT-4 has similar limitations to previous versions; it is still not fully reliable and makes judgment errors. However, “GPT-4 significantly reduces delusions compared to previous models” and scores 40 percent higher than GPT-3.5 on reality assessments. It will therefore be much harder to trick the GPT-4 into producing undesirable outputs such as hate speech and misinformation.

GPT-4 is better at understanding non-English languages.

Machine learning data, like most of the information on the internet today, is mostly in English, so training LLMs in other languages can be challenging.

But GPT-4 is more multilingual, and OpenAI has proven that it outperforms GPT-3.5 and other LLMs by correctly answering thousands of multiple-choice questions in 26 languages. Obviously it does best in English with 85.5 percent accuracy, but Indian languages such as Teluguca are not far behind at 71.4 percent. This means that users can use GPT-4-based chatbots to produce clearer and more accurate output in their native languages.

Is GPT-4 paid?

OpenAI’s multimodal language model GPT-4 has been much talked about since its release. The added features and capabilities of GPT-4 have generated a lot of interest among users and developers. GPT-4 can be accessed through ChatGPT Plus or through the ChatGPT API by joining the waiting list.

OpenAI GPT-3 used in ChatGPT is free of charge. ChatGPT Plus is a paid upgrade version that costs $20 per month. This raises the most important question: Will GPT-4 be free?

OpenAI’s GPT-4 will not be free, but will include different pricing depending on whether one uses GPT-4 through ChatGPT Plus or the API.

How much does GPT-4 cost?

If you are accessing GPT-4 through ChatGPT Plus, you will need to subscribe to its plan, which costs $20 per month. However, if you are accessing GPT-4 through the API, there are two pricing options available for GPT-4 depending on context lengths.

OpenAI has reduced the price of context tokens so that users can effortlessly use the new language model GPT-4.

Here is the cost for models (GPT-4 and GPT-4-0314) with 8K context length (about 13 pages of text):

  • $0.03 per 1K prompt token
  • 0.06 dollars per 1K completion token

Here is the cost for models (GPT-4-32k and GPT-4-32k-0314) with 32K context length (about 52 pages of text):

  • $0.06 per 1K prompt token
  • 0.12 dollars per 1K completion token

How to access GPT-4 for free?
You cannot access GPT-4 for free. You need to purchase tokens to access GPT-4 through the API according to your needs and context texts.

There are two pricing costs available for GPT-4, starting at $0.03 for a 1K fast token. However, if you are accessing GPT-4 on ChatGPT Plus, you need to subscribe to their monthly plan, which costs $20 per month.
